Your Halifax Mooseheads will wrap up their current road trip tonight at 7pm in Saint John where they battle the Sea Dogs at TD Station. It’s the first game of 2023 for the Herd as the team looks to build on a strong first half of the season as they drive towards the playoffs.
Halifax has two wins to go with an overtime loss since returning to action after Christmas to improve their record to 23-7-4-1, good for first place in the Maritimes Division, second place in the Eastern Conference and third place in the overall standings behind Quebec and Victoriaville. The Mooseheads enter the week listed 8th in the Canadian Hockey League Top 10 Rankings.
Forward Josh Lawrence is the reigning QMJHL Player of the Week after scoring 10 points in three games. Tonight he faces off with his former team for the first time. The 20-year-old was drafted by Saint John and played there for four seasons, culminating with a Memorial Cup Championship last June. Meantime, Zachary L’Heureux was honoured this week as the QMJHL’s best forward for the month of December. The Nashville Predators prospect has been excellent since returning to the lineup in late November following offseason surgery and scored eight goals and 10 assists in his 10 games in December. L’Heureux is already eighth in Mooseheads scoring this season with 23 points despite only playing in a fraction of the games.
The Sea Dogs are in a major rebuilding mode after their championship season. GM Trevor Georgie continued to jettison his veteran players over the holiday break by trading away Cam MacDonald to Gatineau and Connor Trenholm to Moncton in an effort to stockpile draft picks. Saint John sits in last place in the overall QMJHL standings with 28 points and a record of 13-20-1-1.
