2017 Canada Russia Series rolls into Charlottetown
On Tuesday, November 14 the EastLink Centre will play host to one of its biggest events of the year, as Game 5 of the Canada Russia Series rolls into Charlottetown.
As part of the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia series, the QMJHL’s best players are set to take on Russia’s finest in the final two games of the annual showcase, which will include 11 NHL prospects.
The Western Hockey League (WHL) won the opening game of the tournament, defeating the young Russian squad 7-0, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Following the loss, Team Russia were ready to go for game 2 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
Trailing 3-1 heading into the third period, the Russians stormed back, scoring three goals in the period, with forward Mikhail Maltsev notching a short-handed goal with less than 10 minutes remaining to give Russia their first lead of the game. Russian netminder Mikhail Berdin made 29 stops as the Russians held on for a 4-3 win over the WHL.
Up next for Russia is another two game series, this time with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
The November 14th game in Charlottetown will be the first game between Team QMJHL and the Russians, and Islanders captain, P.O. Joseph is looking forward to the opportunity to play with the QMJHL’s best.
“It will be fun,” Joseph said. “I have the chance to play with a lot of great players in the league and to play some good hockey against Russia.”
It is guaranteed to be a game of firsts for Joseph.
“It was fun to get named to the game for sure. It will be my first time playing against another country, so I’m sure it will be a lot of fun.”
Joseph is not the only Islander on Team QMJHL, as Isles Head Coach and General manager Jim Hulton was named to the coaching staff and will be behind the bench for the two game series.
“Anytime you get to work with elite players in an all-star games or a format like this it’s a privilege, and it’s an honour,” Hulton said. “To be able to represent the Islanders on that big of stage is a great thing.”
