Screaming Eagles trade Ellis to Cataractes
Sydney – The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles have traded defenseman Morgan Ellis (1992-04-30) to the Shawinigan Cataractes. In return the Screaming Eagles will receive forward Bronson Beaton (1995-02-06), Shawinigan’s 1st round draft pick in the 2013 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s midget draft and Shawinigan’s 2nd round pick in the 2012 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s midget draft.
In announcing the trade, General Manager Pierre Roux said it is not easy trading a player like Morgan Ellis who has spent his entire career with the Screaming Eagles.
“Morgan grew up in the organization and was our captain, but the reality is he will most likely only be playing in our league until the end of this year while the assets we acquired will contribute to the Screaming Eagles for a number of years.”
Ellis played in over 200 games for the Screaming Eagles after being drafted in the third round of the 2008 draft.
In Beaton, the 6’0”, 170lb. centre was Shawinigan’s second pick, 23rd overall in the 2011 midget draft. In limited action with the Memorial Cup host Cataractes, the Springhill, N.S. native has scored once in 23 games. He is currently playing with Team Atlantic at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Windsor, Ontario.
Besides adding another young player in Beaton, who had 17 goals and added 31 assists in 35 games with the Pictou County Weeks Major Midget team last year, Roux continues to acquire draft picks for the upcoming drafts.
“For 2012 we now have seven picks in the first four rounds plus another first round pick in 2013 which puts us in a good position going forward.”
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s trade period ends at 1:00 pm Atlantic Standard Time on Saturday January 7th.
