Q & A with Brett Malone:
Q1: Tell us about your Minor Hockey career.
A1: My Minor hockey career was basically like every other kids. I lived at home and played with my friends right up until I was about 15-years-old. We were always called the Miramichi Rivermen.
Q2: Where did you play your Midget hockey?
A2: I was lucky enough to play my Major Midget in my back yard for the Miramichi Rivermen. We become Provincial champs my second year. There is only two other players in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League right now off my midget team, including Justin Hache and the other one is Trey Lewis of the Halifax Mooseheads.
Q3: You were drafted by the Moncton Wildcats at the 2010 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft in round three, 52nd overall. Tell us about your draft year and what your thoughts were on being selected by Moncton.
A3: I tried not think to much about the draft, but once my name was called by Moncton I was happy due to the fact that I grew up watching the Wildcats.
Q4: You played two full seasons with the Moncton Wildcats. Tell us about your time with Moncton.
A4: I had a blast. It is a great organization full of great people. I would not change a thing except for a few things on ice, but overall I am happy with my time in Moncton.
Q5: After seven games with the Wildcats this season, the club placed you on waivers. The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles claimed you off waivers on October 24th. Were you shocked to be placed on waivers? What were your thoughts on coming to Cape Breton?
A5: I was, but I was not shocked. It is never easy news to hear, but once I got the call from Ron (Choules) I was happy to join the Eagles as it was a new start.
Q6: What do you believe you bring to the young Screaming Eagles hockey club?
A6: The biggest thing I think I bring to the team is experience in the league.
Q7: Tell us about your hometown of Miramichi, NB.
A7: It is a small town, which reminds me a lot of Sydney, so playing here kind of feels like I am at home. We are the Irish Capital of Canada, so every year we have a big Irish Festival that always falls on my birthday. It is right in the middle between Moncton and Bathurst so I grew up watching both teams as a kid.
Q8: Tell us some interesting facts about your family.
A8: We are a close family, some people would call us a hockey family due to the success that we have had with the game. My dad was drafted first round by the Rangers, while my uncle played 12 years in the NHL with Hartford, Quebec, and Pittsburgh. My cousin is playing in the NHL with Tampa Bay Lightning, before that he played with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and also won a silver medal at the 2010 Olympics with team USA. My brother is playing in the AHL right now with the Lake Erie Monsters. Other than that we are just another family that likes to spend time together and have fun.
Q9: Who is the one person you would like to thank for getting you where you are today with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles? Why?
A9: There is no certain person, but I would like to thank my whole family, from my parents, brother, uncles and cousins. There all supportive with what ever I do and they are there for me when I need them.
Q10: What is one thing you like about Cape Breton?
A10: It reminds me a lot of Miramichi and the people are very nice. Everyone I have met in Cape Breton is really welcoming, so that helps a lot.
