Perfect weekend for the Cataractes!
2 games. 24 hours. Shawinigan had to face Drummondville and Saint-John on home ice and Daniel Renaud’s team didn’t waste the opportunity to win both games: 4-3 against the Voltigeurs and 3-2, in overtime, against the Sea Dogs. Two players emerged from those two wins: Jérémy Manseau and Cameron Askew.
Magnificent show on Friday night!
After 34 minutes of play, Drummondville had every chance to in the world to think that the game was over after taking a 3-1 lead and controlling the pace of the game. Only Alex Plamondon, on a nice Gabriel Denis’ feed, had managed to beat all-star netminder Olivier Rodrigue.
But, that was before Cameron Askew completely changed things around. In only 3 minutes in a half, he scored twice (the second goal came with only 6 seconds left in the 2nd period). Everything was in place for a great period.
Who could be the hero in the third? Who could make the difference in this one? Well, Jérémy Manseau embraced the role. Traded before the start of the season for almost nothing (12th round pick), Manseau scored with 7 minutes left in the game a beauty that would become the game winning goal.
After the game, Manseau told reporters that he wanted to give 10$ to the guy that would get the game winner. I had no idea that it would be me! (laughs)
Also, Mikhail Denisov made 25 saves to get the win.
Cameron Askew, Cameron Askew… Cameron Askew!
On Saturday afternoon, the Saint-John Sea Dogs were in town ending their road trip with a game against their long-time rivals. And the visitors were ready as they took a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Both goals, scored by Ostap Safin and Joe Veleno, came with a man advantage.
Despite being down by two, we saw the Cataractes come back with harm and dedication. First, Gabriel Sylvestre notched his 5th of the season when he completed the play initiated bye Samuel Asselin and Cameron Askew.
Then, in the 3rd period, Antoine Demers, with less than 5 minutes into the game, completed the comeback as he took Alex D’Orio by surprise to tie the game at 2-2.
In overtime, power forward Cameron Askew gave home fans a reason to celebrate when he skated down the right wing and found a tiny space over Alex D’Orio’s shoulder to give Daniel Renaud’s team the win.
For Shawinigan, Lucas Fitzpatrick stopped 30 shots to get the win.
