CHL Today: Memorial Cup hosts Oceanic win fourth straight

- A 4-2 road loss to Barrie saw the Brampton Steelheads (1) suffer a third straight loss. Brampton’s 32 goals scored however remain tied for the third most in the OHL.
- The Moncton Wildcats (2) exploded for a season high nine goals as they defeated the Sherbrooke Phoenix (4) 9-3. It marked the Wildcats’ third straight win while in seven games this year, they’ve only been beaten once in regulation.
- With a 5-4 win over Prince Albert, the Prince George Cougars (3) collected their fifth win of the campaign. The Cougars’ 38 goals are tied for the second most in the WHL.
- The Saginaw Spirit (5) saw a four-game winning streak snapped as they fell 7-4 to Kitchener on home ice. Saginaw’s nine points are the fourth most in the OHL.
- William Lacelle made 19 saves to record the shutout as the Rimouski Oceanic (6) beat Quebec 4-0. The win was the Oceanic’s fourth in a row.
- The Red Deer Rebels (7) suffered a third straight loss after a 5-1 defeat in Edmonton.
- After they suffered their first defeat of the season Friday, the Niagara IceDogs (8) rebounded Saturday with a 7-5 win over North Bay. Niagara are just one of two OHL clubs to have five wins this season.
- The Medicine Hat Tigers (9) continue to trend upwards after a third consecutive win courtesy of a 5-2 victory against Vancouver.
- The London Knights (10) secured a third straight win thanks to a 5-1 victory over Guelph. The Knights own the OHL’s second best power play at 33.3 per cent.
NHL prospect watch
- Tomas Lavoie (UTA) had a career high four assists in Cape Breton’s 8-4 win against Val-d’Or. Lavoie sits third in QMJHL scoring among d-men this year with 11 points.
- Andrei Loshko (SEA) had two goals and an assist to help lead Niagara to victory over North Bay. Loshko has adapted nicely to life in the OHL with 12 points (five goals) in just six games.
- William Nichol (EDM) tallied three points (2G, 1A) in London’s win against Guelph. Nichol’s eight points are tied for the Knights scoring lead.
- Riley Heidt (MIN) had his third WHL hat-trick in the Cougars’ 5-4 win over the Raiders. Heidt, who had 117 points a year ago, has 11 (four goals) in six games this season.
- Andrew Basha (CGY) had four assists in the Tigers victory over the Giants. Basha has points in his last four games and sits second in Tigers scoring with nine points.
Nightly notes
- Cape Breton’s Cole Burbidge matched his career high five points (3G, 2A) in an 8-4 road win over Val-d’Or. The hat-trick was the second of his Q career while his nine points this season leads all Eagles forwards.
- Riley Mercer registered his sixth career shutout as he made all 35 saves as Drummondville beat Rouyn-Noranda 1-0. The QMJHL champion is a perfect 6-0-0 this season with a 1.17 GAA and .963 save percentage.
- Owen Sound’s Landen Hookey had a third period hat-trick in a 7-2 win against Peterborough. Hookey, who had a career high 15 goals and 29 points a year ago, leads the Attack with eight points in 2024-25.
- Adrian Misaljevic notched four points (2G, 2A) in Kitchener’s road win over Saginaw. Misaljevic had a career high 58 points a year ago and leads the Rangers in goals (5) and points (12) this season. Kitchener tops the OHL’s Midwest Division early on and are 4-0-2 in their last six games.
- After he scored his first goal of the season Friday, Gavin McKenna (2026) followed that up with a four-point showing (1G, 3A) Saturday in Medicine Hat’s win over Vancouver. McKenna is tied third in WHL scoring with 14 points this season.
- Carter Bear (2025) had a season high four points (2G, 2A) to lead Everett to a 6-3 road win over Swift Current. The victory was also the Silvertips’ WHL best seventh of the season.
