Rangers’ John Gibson Named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that John Gibson of the Kitchener Rangers is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the playoff week ending April 8 after posting a 1-1 record including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .976.
Gibson was busy in the opening two games of the Western Conference Semi-Final series against the Plymouth Whalers making a total of 83 saves. In Game 1 of the series on Friday he earned his first career playoff shutout stopping 40 shots as first star of a 2-0 win in Plymouth, then made 43 saves and was recognized as third star of the Game 2 contest despite a 2-0 loss to the Whalers on home ice Sunday night.
Gibson, an 18-year-old from Pittsburgh, PA, is playing in his first OHL season with the Rangers after being selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. A member of the U.S National Junior Team this season, Gibson has five post-season wins with a goals-against-average of 1.99 and league-high save percentage of .953 in seven games.
Also considered for the award this week was Etienne Marcoux of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada who went 1-1 against the Rimouski Oceanic in the first two games of their second round playoff series earning a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 2.01 and save percentage of .941. In the WHL, Luke Siemens has two victories with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .938 for the Moose Jaw Warriors who currently lead their second round playoff series 2-0 over the Medicine Hat Tigers.
