Day 1 at WU17 Recap

Sarnia, ON – Day one of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge featured plenty of scoring, with Canada Red standing as the lone Canadian club to prevail on Sunday. The six day tournament being held in Sarnia and Lambton Shores, ON, features the top 16 year-old talent from across the globe.
Here’s a look at Sunday’s action.
FINLAND 5 — CANADA WHITE 1
The shot clock was deadlocked at 28, but the scoreboard told a different story. A speedy Finnish team capitalized on their opportunities in a 5-1 victory over Canada White to kick off the tournament.
Canada White got on the board first with Tyson Jost (Penticton, BCHL) scoring the lone marker for his club on the powerplay. Finland would respond with five unanswered from five different scorers as Pete Niemi scored the go-ahead goal at 7:52 of the second period.
Canada White was without defenceman Jakob Chychrun (Sarnia Sting), who will miss the duration of the tournament due to injury.

UNITED STATES 6 — SWEDEN 3
The United States powered to a 6-3 victory over Sweden behind a strong performance from Saginaw Spirit draftee Nick Pastujov who had a goal and two assists.
The Americans outshot Sweden 34-24 as other USA goals came from Trent Frederic, Clayton Keller, Max Jones, Patrick Khodorenko and Keeghan Howdeshell.
Sweden responded with markers from William Fallstrom, Oliver Olsson and Marcus Davidsson.

RUSSIA 5 — CANADA BLACK 1
Two clubs combined for six goals on a total of 36 shots as Russia was the more opportunistic team in a 5-1 win over Canada Black.
The Russians jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals from Maxim Bain and Dmitri Sokolov. Canada Black would respond early in the second on a nifty passing play, with Zach Poirier (North Bay Battalion) finishing off a sequence with Pascal Laberge (Gatineau Olympiques) and Reagan O’Grady (Kingston Frontenacs).
The Canadians could muster no further offense as Sokolov would add a second goal for the Russians who went 2 for 3 on the powerplay enroute to a 5-1 win.

CANADA RED 6 — SLOVAKIA 0
Canada’s lone victory on Sunday came at The Shores Recreation Centre in Lambton Shores. Waterloo native Logan Stanley (Windsor Spitfires) scored twice and Canada Red outshot Slovakia 45-14 in a 6-0 win.
In addition to Stanley’s pair, Canadian goals came from Dante Fabbro (Penticton, BCHL), Logan Brown (Windsor Spitfires), Miguel Picard (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada) and Mathieu Sévigny (Drummondville Voltigeurs). Big forward Nolan Patrick (Brandon Wheat Kings) led all Canada Red players with three assists in the victory.
Goaltender Dylan Wells (Peterborough Petes) collected a shutout under a light workload, making 14 saves.
