Oil Kings send Semchuk to ICE for conditional draft pick

The Kootenay ICE added depth on right wing Thursday morning, acquiring 19-year-old Brendan Semchuk from the Edmonton Oil Kings in exchange for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.

Semchuk, a product of Kamloops, B.C., skated in two games with the Oil Kings to start the 2018-19 WHL Regular Season, registering zero points and logging a 33 per cent (2/6) success rate in the faceoff circle.

“Brendan is a player that brings experience, speed and skill to our forward group,” said Matt Cockell, President and General Manager of the ICE.

A veteran of 145 career WHL regular season games, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound right winger has 48 points (21G-27A) to his credit since being selected by the Vancouver Giants in the first round (10^th) of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft.

The Oil Kings originally acquired Semchuk at the 2018 WHL Trade Deadline. Alongside goaltender Todd Scott and a 2018 third-round pick, Semchuk was part of Edmonton’s return in a deal that sent veteran Davis Koch and a 2019 third-round pick to the Giants.

Splitting the 2017-18 season between Vancouver and Edmonton, Semchuk enjoyed a career year with 12 goals, 14 assists and 26 points through 49 outings.

Next up for the ICE is a home date against the Spokane Chiefs on Friday, September 28 at 7 p.m. MT. Kootenay won its home opener on Saturday, defeating the Calgary Hitmen by a 5-3 margin.
