Matthew Savoie signs WHL Standard Player Agreement with Winnipeg ICE

Matthew Savoie, the first-overall selection from the 2019 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the Winnipeg ICE.

A product of St. Albert, Alta., Savoie played the 2018-19 season with the Northern Alberta Xtreme Midget Prep of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League. In 31 regular season games, Savoie recorded 71 points (31G-40A). He had 12 points (3G-9A) in five playoff games as the Xtreme won the CSSHL Midget Prep Championship and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.

“Today is an exciting day for the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg ICE franchise,” said Matt Cockell, President and General Manager. “Matt is an elite player and we are excited that he has chosen the WHL and Winnipeg ICE to continue his development.”

With Savoie’s signing, 16 of the 22 first-round selections from the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft have now signed WHL Standard Player Agreements. In the 2017-18 season, Savoie played with the program’s Bantam Prep team, recording 97 points (28G-69A) in 30 games. He led the league in assists and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.

The 5-foot-9, 165-pound forward also represented Alberta at the 2019 Canada Winter Games, recording 13 points (6G-7A) in six games to help the host province win bronze.

Savoie’s selection made it five consecutive years an Albertan had been selected with the first-overall pick in the WHL Bantam Draft following Ty Smith, Peyton Krebs, Kaiden Guhle, and Dylan Guenther.

Savoie is the third player from the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft class to sign with the organization following Conor Geekie and Daniel Hauser.
