ICE HOLD OFF WINTERHAWKS’ RALLY TO TAKE GAME TWO – Kevin King and Matt Fraser each scored twice as the visiting Kootenay Ice downed the Portland Winterhawks 7-5 in Game 2 of the 2011 WHL Championship series on Saturday night in Portland, OR.
Cody Eakin – with a goal and two assists – Max Reinhart and Steele Boomer also scored for the Ice, who connected for five goals, including four on the power play, in the second period and held off a Winterhawks comeback attempt in the third to even up the series.
Sven Bartschi scored twice while Brendan Leipsic, Taylor Peters and Joe Morrow scored for the Winterhawks, whose rally from a 6-2 deficit in the third period fell just short in the Game 2 loss.
Nathan Lieuwen turned aside 39 of 44 shots he faced, including 23 of 27 in the third frame, to post his 13th win of the post-season.
Mac Carruth stopped 23 of 29 shots he faced through 34 minutes of action to take the loss while Keith Hamilton stopped all 13 shots he faced after coming into the game with five minutes remaining in the second frame.
The Ice host the Winterhawks for Games 3 and 4 of the best-of-seven series on Tuesday and Wednesday in Cranbrook, B.C.
