WHL Roundup: Routs the flavour of the day as Warriors, Royals win big

The Saskatoon Blades continued their winning ways on the road at the Art Hauser Centre Thursday, outscoring the Prince Albert Raiders 5-1 over the final 40 minutes to come away with a 6-4 victory.
Things didn’t start well for the Blades. Goals from Parker Kelly (Ottawa Senators), Eric Pearce and Carson Miller had the Raiders up 3-1 after 20 minutes as the Blades could only muster a mid-period goal from Josh Paterson in response.
The momentum changed in the second though. Chase Wouters scored to bring the Blades within one and Paterson scored later in the period to even up the score after 40 minutes. Early in the third, Paterson completed his hat trick and the Blades were off to the races.
Braylon Shmyr scored the decisive goal with 5:59 to go in the third, while late goals from Brett Leason and Shmyr’s second of the game rounded out a four-goal third period.
Paterson, Shmyr and Wouters each finished with four points, collecting a hat trick, two-goal performance and three assist night respectively.
Nolan Maier stopped 38 of 42 shots in the win. Ian Scott (Toronto Maple Leafs) 33 of 38 in the loss.

Brandon Wheat Kings (4) at Regina Pats (5)

A four-goal second period propelled the Regina Pats to an important two points in the standings Thursday night in their return to the Brandt Centre.
Logan Nijhoff and Matt Bradley each collected a goal and an assist while Jake Leschyshyn (Vegas Golden Knights) and Dawson Davidson each had a pair of helpers as the Pats earned a split in a home-and-home series with the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Ty Leiws (Colorado Avalanche) and Evan Weinger scored to put the visitors up 2-0 early in the second, but the Pats reeled off three straight goals from Cale Fleury (Montreal Canadiens), Nijhoff and Bryan Lockner in a 2:23 span to take over the lead.
Zach Wytinck would tie up the game minutes later with his 12th of the season, but Nick Henry (Colorado Avalanche) would put the Pats back on top by a goal after 40 minutes.
After a wild second, the third was relatively tame, with goals from Stelio Mattheos (Carolina Hurricanes) and Bradley to round out the combined nine-goal performance.
Tyler Brown found his way into the win column with 24 saves on 28 shots. Dylan Myskiw stopped 31 of 36 shots in the loss.

Swift Current Broncos (2) at Moose Jaw Warriors (8)

Hours after signing a three-year entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks, Jayden Halbgewachs (San Jose Sharks) tallied a pair of goals and three points to take over the goal scoring lead in the WHL as the Moose Jaw Warriors routed the Swift Current Broncos on home ice.
Justin Almeida, Tristin Langan and Luka Burzan each had a goal and an assist while Josh Brook (Montreal Canadiens) and Tanner Jeannot had a pair of helpers in the lopsided victory.
Kole Gable and Beck Malenstyn scored for the Broncos in the loss.
Goals from Almeida, Dmitri Zaitsev and Halbgewachs in a 3:02 span during the first period paced the Warriors to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Broncos got themselves back into the game with a pair of goals in the second, but the Warriors kept coming, with Burzan’s fifth of the year keep Moose Jaw in a comfortable lead.
Halbgewachs scored his second of the game early in the third, and the Warriors kept pressing from there, tallying three late goals from Langan, Oleg Sosunov (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Vince Loschiavo in a 2:16 span.
Brody Willms picked up his 46th career WHL victory with a 28-save performance. Logan Flodell made 37 saves and Joel Hofer made one save on one shot in 2:38 of action.

Kootenay ICE (4) at Calgary Hitmen (3)

Brett Davis scored short-handed on a breakaway in the third period of Thursday’s contest to secure a 4-3 victory for the Kootenay ICE in the fourth of four straight meetings between the two clubs.
Colton Veloso scored twice while Alec Baer had the other ICE goal as the Cranbrook, B.C.-based club extended their winning streak to four games with their three straight victory by a final score of 4-3.
Mark Kastelic, Luke Coleman and Orca Wiesblatt scored for the Hitmen in the loss. Cameron Hausinger and Peyton Krebs each had a pair of assists for the ICE.
Duncan McGovern stopped 10 of 13 shots in the victory. Nick Schneider (Calgary Flames) stopped 34 of 38 in the loss.

Red Deer Rebels (3) at Edmonton Oil Kings (4) — OT

Trey Fix-Wolansky scored with 12 seconds left in overtime Thursday as the Edmonton Oil Kings complete a home-and-home sweep of the Red Deer Rebels.
Fix-Wolansky and Connor McDonald each had a goal and an assist while Josh Dechaine stopped 23 shots to pick up his second win in as many nights. Ethan Anders stopped 22 of 26 in the loss.
Brian Harris and Grayson Pawlenchuk exchanged goals in the first, while David Kope had the lone goal of the second period to put Edmonton up 2-1 after 40. In the third, Dawson Barteaux and Mason McCarty scored 90 seconds apart to put the Rebels up for the first time in the game. McDonald’s goal a few minutes later tied forced overtime before Fix-Wolansky ended things permanently with his 14th of the season.

Prince George Cougars (1) at Victoria Royals (7)

Matthew Phillips (Calgary Flames) scored a pair of goals and Chaz Reddekopp (Los Angeles Kings) picked up three assists as the Victoria Royals lambasted the Prince George Cougars with a 7-1 beatdown Thursday to close out a two-game series in the provincial capital.
Making his debut with his new club, Jeff de Wit had a goal and an assist while Scott Walford (Montreal Canadiens) and Dante Hannoun each had a pair of assists.
Dino Kambeitz and Phillips scored 29 seconds apart in the first, followed shortly after by a Josh Maser goal for the Cougars’ lone offence of the night. Phillips notched his second of the night later in the period to earn both the game-winner and insurance goal of the game, but the Royals were far from done.
Spencer Gerth and Tyler Soy (Anaheim Ducks) scored in the second period while de Wit and Jeremy Masella scored in the third to round things out.
Griffen Outhouse stopped 23 of 24 shots, giving way to Dean McNabb in the final few minutes for him to make four saves on four shots. Taylor Gauthier stopped 17 of 24 shots in the loss. Isaiah Di Laura stopped all six shots he saw in 13:52 of action.
