WHL alumni Outhouse, McGinley help UNB Reds complete perfect AUS season
Fredericton, N.B. – There isn’t much the University of New Brunswick REDS men’s hockey team hasn’t accomplished.
But on February 10, the squad hit a new milestone by completing the first perfect season in program history with a 9-1 win over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers.
Longtime Swift Current Broncos defenceman Sam McGinley (who also played a handful of games with the Regina Pats) tallied his fourth assist of the season in the victory to help complete UNB’s 30-0 run.
McGinley suited up for 195 WHL games over parts of five seasons, tallying 20 goals and 57 assists.
While it’s an exciting conclusion to McGinley’s rookie regular season in U SPORTS, it’s familiar territory for REDS veteran goaltender Griffen Outhouse.
2023-24 marks Outhouse’s fourth year in Fredericton, where the Williams Lake, B.C. product put up a pristine 14-0-0-0 record, including four shutouts.
His 1.21 goals-against average and .939 save percentage led all AUS goaltenders.
Outhouse, a two-time Atlantic University Sport champion and 2023 U SPORTS champion, played nearly 200 regular season games with the Victoria Royals, putting up an impressive 114-60-15 record to go along with a 2.77 goals-against average and .917 save percentage.
With a first-place finish in the AUS standings, the REDS have earned a first-round bye in the AUS playoffs and will host Game One of their conference semi-final series on Friday, February 23- the first step in defending their title as reigning national champions.
