Warriors’ Zach Sawchenko named WHL Goaltender of the Week
Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Moose Jaw Warriors goaltender Zach Sawchenko has been named the WHL Goaltender of the Week and the league nominee for Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending February 19, 2017.
A 19-year-old product of Calgary, AB, Sawchenko went 2-0-0-0 this past week with a 0.50 goals-against average, .981 save percentage and one shutout.
On Tuesday, February 14, Sawchenko stopped 15 shots in a 3-1 win versus Brandon. Capping his stellar week, he then put forth a perfect performance on Saturday, February 18, turning aside all 37 pucks sent his way in a 4-0 win versus Regina, earning first star honours.
Through 40 appearances in his fourth WHL season, Sawchenko is 23-11-5-1 with a 2.78 GAA, .919 SV% and two shutouts. His .919 SV% ranks fifth among all WHL goaltenders.
This is the second time this season Sawchenko has been recognized as WHL Goaltender of the Week. He was also honoured for the week ending November 6, 2016. That same week, he was tabbed Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for his outstanding performance.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound netminder is eligible for the 2017 NHL Draft.
Originally selected by the Moose Jaw Warriors in the second round (33rd) of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, Sawchenko has amassed a career record of 81-62-11-4 with a 3.13 GAA, .908 SV% and four shutouts in 166 career WHL regular season appearances.
