Warriors’ Sawchenko named WHL Goaltender of the Week
Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Moose Jaw Warriors goaltender Zach Sawchenko has been named the WHL Goaltender of the Week and the league nominee for Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending November 6, 2016.
Sawchenko, an 18-year-old product of Calgary, went 2-0-0-0 this past week, including a 41-save performance in a 3-1 win versus the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday, November 1, in which he earned first-star honours. Sawchenko closed the weekend with another first-star performance on Friday, November 4, making 36 saves in a 3-1 win versus the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Over the two contests, Sawchenko notched a 1.00 goals-against average and .975 save percentage.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Sawchenko is eligible for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. In October, he was named to the NHL Central Scouting ‘Players to Watch’ List and given a ‘C’ rating. In nine appearances this season, Sawchenko has accumulated a record of 6-1-2-0 with a 2.82 GAA and .915 SV%.
Sawchenko, who was a second round pick (33rd) of the Moose Jaw Warriors at the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, is in his fourth WHL campaign, having compiled a record of 64-52-8-3, 3.22 GAA, .904 SV% and six shutouts in 135 career WHL regular season appearances.
