Howden Records Five Points: Leads Canada Past Switzerland 9-1
GRAND FORKS, ND – Moose Jaw Warriors’ forward Brett Howden recorded five points (2g-3a) to lead Canada to a dominant performance over Switzerland in quarter-final action, cruising to a 9-1 victory.
Howden picked up his first point of the contest with an assist on a power play goal from Medicine Hat Tigers defenceman David Quenneville that gave Canada a 2-0 lead late in the first period.
Howden then collected assists on Canada’s third and fourth goals from Tyson Jost and Cameron Morrison in the middle frame followed by a goal of his own early in the third period to give Canada a commanding 6-1 cushion. Quenneville tallied his second point of the contest with an assist on a goal from Jost that increased Canada’s lead to 7-1. Howden then tacked on his second goal of the game late in the third period as Canada solidified a 9-1 win.
Canada was dynamite on special teams, finishing 4/5 on the power play while Switzerland finished 1/8 on the man advantage. Shots on goal favoured Canada 45-26.
Canada will play the winner of the Sweden-Slovakia quarter-final in Saturday’s semi-final game.
