QUICK HITS

• The CHL holds an all-time record of 59-19-1-6 in the event, winning 11 of the 14 series. The CHL comes off back-to-back series victories for the first time since 2008 and 2009.

• The WHL holds an all-time record of 20-6-1-2 in the CIBC Canada Russia Series and is 10-4 in their second encounter of the series against Russia all-time. 

• The CIBC Canada Russia Series returns to Swift Current for the first time since 2008 when current day New York Islanders forward Jordan Eberle of the Regina Pats had two goals and an assist in a 5-0 win. The CHL would go on to win the 2008 series, taking wins in five of the six games.

• The team that has won Game 1 has gone on to win the entire series 10 out of 14 times. Despite losing Game 1 in overtime last year, the Canadian Hockey League went on to win the series 13-5 in points.

SERIES NOTES

HOWDEN AND MAHURA OUT, LESCHYSHYN AND SISSONS IN: Team WHL forward Brett Howden and defenceman Josh Mahura are out of tonight’s lineup with inujries. They are replaced by Vegas Golden Knights prospect Jake Leschyshyn of the Regina Pats and New Jersey Devils prospect Colby Sissons of the host Swift Current Broncos tonight.

A SHUTOUT SECOND: The CIBC Canada Russia series started with a shutout for just the second time in event history on Monday in Moose Jaw. The 7-0 Team WHL blanking of Russia follows a 2-0 shutout win for Russia in Game 1 of the 2011 event that took place in Victoriaville, QC.

HART ADDS NAME TO RECORD BOOKS: Carter Hart’s 20-save shutout on Monday makes him the third WHL goaltender in event history to record a 60-minute shutout. He joins Chet Pickard (2008) and Laurent Brossoit (2012) in that category.

CLAGUE’S THREE HELPERS: Los Angeles Kings prospect Kale Clague of the Brandon Wheat Kings became the sixth WHL player in event history to register three assists in a single game. He follows Collin Shirley (2015), Thomas Hickey (2008), Nick Drazenovic (2005), Scott Jackson (2005) and Ryan Stone (2004) in doing so.

RUSSIAN RESPONSE: Game 1 marked the ninth time in event history that Russia has surrendered at least seven goals in a game, something that has happened just twice since 2012. Russia has lost the opening game of the CIBC Canada Russia Series eight times in 15 years, going 1-6 in Game 2 scenarios following an opening loss.
