Bean signs with Carolina Hurricanes
Calgary, AB – The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club would like to congratulate defenceman Jake Bean on signing an entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Bean, a native of Calgary, Alberta, became the 51st player in franchise history to be selected in the NHL Draft when the Hurricanes chose him last month in the first round, 13th overall.
“On behalf of the Hitmen organization, we are extremely proud of Jake in signing his first pro contract,” said Mike Moore, Hitmen General Manager and Vice President of Business Operations. “It’s been exciting watching Jake’s journey from when he first joined our club in 2013 to this point today. The dedication and commitment he has made is highlighted by this milestone.”
Bean, 18, recently completed his second Western Hockey League season where he led all WHL defenceman with 24 goals, setting a new single-season franchise record for most goals by a blueliner. He finished his sophomore year with 64 points, sixth-best among WHL rearguards, and was named co-winner of the club’s Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop Top Defenceman Award as well as the WHL Eastern Conference Most Sportsmanlike Player. Later this month, Bean will join 40 players attending Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Summer Development Camp in Toronto from July 30 – August 2. He represented Canada last summer, helping his home country capture its eighth consecutive gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.
The Hitmen added Bean to the club’s protected player list in September 2013.
