96 CHL Players Selected in the 2016 NHL Draft

Buffalo, NY – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 96 CHL players were selected in the seven rounds of the 2016 NHL Draft held this weekend at First Niagara Center in Buffalo representing over 45% of the 211 players picked by all 30 NHL clubs.

The 96 CHL players includes 15 selected in the first round including five picks in the top-10 led by Pierre-Luc Dubois of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles chosen third overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets.  The second and third rounds of the 2016 NHL Draft featured 16 players respectively meaning the league occupied over 50% of all picks through the first 30, 61, and 91 selections.

Of the 96 CHL players selected, the Ontario Hockey League leads the way with 48 players which matches a modern draft record set in 2012 and ties the league’s highest total since 1999 when 52 players were selected in the nine-round draft process.  The Western Hockey League had 34 players selected for the second straight season, while 14 players were chosen from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

By position, a total of 118 forwards were selected (56 CHL), 75 defencemen (33 CHL), and 18 goaltenders (7 CHL). The league featured five of the first 10 forwards chosen overall including Dubois, fifth overall pick Matthew Tkachuk (Calgary) of the London Knights, eighth overall pick Alexander Nylander (Buffalo) of the Mississauga Steelheads, 11th overall pick Logan Brown (Montreal) of the Windsor Spitfires, and 12th overall pick Michael McLeod (New Jersey) of the Steelheads.  On defence, the CHL produced the first three picks at the position including the Knights’ Olli Juolevi (Vancouver) at fifth overall, the Spitfires’ Mikhail Sergachev (Montreal) at ninth overall, and Jake Bean (Carolina) of the Calgary Hitmen chosen 13th overall.  In goal, CHL netminders represented the first two picked at the position led by Carter Hart (Philadelphia) of the Everett Silvertips going 48th overall, followed by the Knights’ Tyler Parsons (Calgary) chosen 54th overall, while Evan Fitzpatrick (St. Louis) of the Sherbrooke Phoenix was the fourth goaltender off the board at 59th overall.

47 different CHL teams developed NHL Draft picks in 2016 including the MasterCard Memorial Cup champion London Knights who led the way with seven players selected.  This figure represents their highest total since eight were picked in 1998 and continues their record streak of players chosen annually since 1969.  The Calgary Hitmen had five players selected for the second time in three years to lead all WHL clubs, while the Mississauga Steelheads set a modern draft record with five players selected.  Two WHL clubs had four players selected including the Victoria Royals who set a new franchise record, while the Kelowna Rockets tied a modern franchise mark.  Historical picks were made involving two OHL clubs as the 2016 NHL Draft featured the first Hamilton Bulldog, and the first two Flint Firebirds ever chosen by NHL clubs.

29 of the 30 NHL teams selected at least one CHL player led by the Tampa Bay Lightning with seven CHL players, followed by the Anaheim Ducks with six.  The Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vancouver Canucks each selected five.  Of the other Canadian NHL teams, the Montreal Canadiens selected four CHL players, while both the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets selected three each, and the Ottawa Senators selected two CHL players.  The Boston Bruins were the lone NHL team not to select a player from the CHL.

Following the 2016 NHL Draft, a total of 5,372 CHL players have been selected since 1969 representing just under 50% of all players.
