WHEATS SET ATTENDANCE MARK
Brandon, Manitoba The Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings have broken their single season franchise attendance record.r

The Wheat Kings broke the old record of 122,080 set during the 1994-95 season on Friday night when the largest crowd of the season 5,429 fans turned out to see Brandon blank the visiting Prince Albert Raiders 4-0.r

The Wheat Kings, who will close out the regular season with three more home games during the final week including Saturday night against Saskatoon, have now drawn a total of 123,394 which translates to an average attendance of 3,739 per home game.r

Friday’s shutout was 19-year old Geoff McIntosh’s second of the season and fifth of his WHL career, tying him with Brian Elder for fourth place on the club’s all time list.r

In other Wheat King news, several former members of the WHL club including the team’s director of community relations Dwayne Gylywoychuk will be flipping burgers and manning the drive thru this Tuesday when Chris de Gobeo and the staff at the Richmond Avenue McDonalds hosts the annual McWheat King Alumni Day.r

Among the many former Wheat Kings that will be working between 11-7 p.m. Tuesday include Trevor Robins, Cam Plante and current assistant coach Brad Wells.r

Plante, whose son Tyler was selected by Brandon in last spring’s WHL Bantam Draft, still holds the league record for most assists by a defenceman (118) while Robins was chosen the league’s Top Goaltender during the ’92-93 campaign.r

Part of the proceeds from the sale of Big Macs on Tuesday will go to the Wheat Kings’ Scholarship Foundation.r
