THE ED CHYNOWETH CUP
Vancouver – The Western Hockey League announced today it has renamed the WHL Championship trophy after former WHL President, Mr. Ed Chynoweth. The WHL Championship trophy, previously referred to as the Presidents Cup, will now be referred to as the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
Ed Chynoweth has been associated with the WHL for the past 36 years, serving as the WHL President from 1972 to 1995. Chynoweth, who began his WHL career in 1971 with the Saskatoon Blades, became the WHL’s first full time President in the fall of 1972. Chynoweth served as President of the WHL for 23 years before becoming majority owner of the WHL Kootenay Ice expansion franchise in 1995.
Chynoweth, who also served as President of the Canadian Hockey League for 20 years from 1975 to 1995, has played a leadership role in major junior hockey and the game in Canada over the past four decades.
Chynoweth is currently the President and Governor of the Kootenay Ice of the WHL. Elected to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2000, Chynoweth has served as WHL Chairman of the Board on two occasions since 1996.
“It is only fitting that the WHL Board of Governors would bestow this honour on Ed Chynoweth,” stated WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “No one has contributed more to the growth and development of the WHL since the Leagues’ inception than Ed Chynoweth.”
The Ed Chynoweth Cup will be presented annually to the WHL Champions commencing with the 2007-08 season.
