ROOKIE CAMP UNDERWAY
Brandon, MB. — The opening day of the Brandon Wheat Kings’ 2015 Rookie Camp has come to an end Wednesday night at Wetman Communications Group Place.
Following back to back practices in the morning, day one capped off with the first of three scrimmages to be played by the Western Hockey League’s top prospects.
Game one was won 8-3 by Team Gold, with 15-year old Rylan Bettens scoring twice to lead the winners. A third round draft choice of the Wheat Kings (51st overall) in this year’s Bantam Draft, the Winnipeg product scored 56 points, including 25 goals with the Winnipeg Bantam Warriors in 2014-15.
Also scoring for Team Gold were defenceman Dane Hirst and forwards Connor Gutenberg, Lynden McCallum, Quin Hobbs, Ty Lewis and Marcus Sekundiak.
Stelio Mattheos, who was the WHL’s first overall selection in the 2014 Bantam Draft, scored once and set up another in a losing cause for Team White, who were outshot 33-29 on the night.
Rounding out the scoring for the Whites were John Patmore and Linden McCorrister.
Game two of Rookie Camp goes at 10am Thursday, with Main Camp scheduled to get underway first thing Friday morning.
The club’s Annual Intrasquad Game will be played at 2pm Sunday.
