MCGAULEY SINKS OIL KINGS
Brandon, MB. — The Brandon Wheat Kings capped off a successful weekend Saturday night by scoring an exciting come from behind victory over Edmonton and completing a 2-game weekend series sweep of the defending Memorial Cup Champions.
Tim McGauley’s second goal of the game at 1:46 of overtime was the difference as Brandon edged the Oil Kings 5-4 to improve to 19-5-1 on the season.
Following an impressive 7-4 victory on Friday, the Wheat Kings picked up right where they left off on Saturday by outshooting, outhitting, outchancing and outscoring Edmonton 2-1 in the first.
McGauley, with his first and Nolan Patrick had Brandon’s first period goals while Lane Bauer scored his first of two for Edmonton.
In the second, goals by Mats Eller, Cole Benson and Bauer gave the Oil Kings a two goal lead through forty minutes and setting the stage for the Wheat Kings dramatic comeback.
Period three saw Jesse Gabrielle pull Brandon to within one at the 1:36 mark and Jayce Hawryluk evened the score with less than five minutes to play. Hawryluk and Gabrielle share the team lead in goals with thirteen.
Jordan Papirny turned aside 28 shots for the win, improving his personal record to 16-4-1 on the season. Rookie netminder Patrick Dea meanwhile stopped 36 in the Oil Kings net, including sixteen in the first when Brandon outshot the visitors 18-7.
With the loss, Edmonton’s record slipped to 12-9-2-2 on the season.
The Wheat Kings will close out their current home stand Tuesday night against Saskatoon. Tickets to the game will go back on sale first thing Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
Tuesday night is also the first “2 for Tuesday” of the 2014-15 season, which means fans purchasing a ticket to the game will receive a second one (of equal or lesser value) for no charge. As well, the Keystone Centre will be offering a number of terrific concession specials throughout the night.
