DERLAGO TAKES A CRACK AT MOOSE
Winnipeg, Manitoba — Former Brandon Wheat Kings’ captain Mark Derlago hits the ice Monday as the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose opened up Training Camp at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.
rDerlago, who led the Western Hockey League with 46 goals during the 2006-07 campaign, is one of thirty-three players on Manitoba’s pre-season roster. Others include the likes of former Portland Winter Hawk Patt Robinson, former Wheat Kings’ draft choice Dirk Southern and Prince Albert product Dylan Yeo, the older brother of Brandon blueliner Theran Yeo.
rThe invitation to Moose camp comes one month after Derlago came to terms with Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL.
rA four year Western Hockey League veteran, the 21-year old Brandon product is coming off an outstanding 2006-07 campaign that saw the former AAA Midget League scoring champion lead the league with 46 goals in 72 games. As well, he added a career high 35 assists to finish his final year of major junior hockey with 81 points.
rBrandon’s Most Valuable Player for the past two seasons, the 49th player in franchise history to wear the “C“ in Brandon, Derlago finished his Western League career with 82 goals and 80 assists for 162 points in 209 regular season games.
rAn excellent baseball player, Mark is the nephew of former Wheat King and National Hockey League scoring star Bill Derlago.
rThe Moose will skate at MTS Centre all week and play an exhibition game with the University of Manitoba Bisons on Wednesday night in Steinbach. Then they’ll travel to Fort Frances and Dryden for pre-season games against the Toronto Marlies on Friday and Saturday nights.
