CROCUS STUDENT WINS ATOM JET AWARD
Brandon, MB. – A grade nine Crocus Plains Secondary School student earned a prestigious award in Winnipeg earlier this month and tonight, he will add to his collection of hardware when he is recognized by both Atom Jet Group and the Wheat Kings as February’s Innovator of the Month.
Carson Funnell will be honoured during Saturday night’s game between the Wheat Kings and visiting Kootenay Ice at Westman Communications Group Place.
Funnell, who was born with Stargardt’s disease, is legally blind and has very little central vision, forcing him to rely on his peripheral vision. In school, he uses his iPad to help him read more clearly and complete his assignments. As well, he has become known for helping out his teachers and classmates with their tech problems throughout the year.
“Any teacher that has a problem right away, I can help,” Carson recently told the Brandon Sun’s Lindsey Enns. “Like if an iPad isn’t working, then I can help them fix it.”
Earlier this month, Funnell was named recipient of a “Yes I can!” technology award during a convention in Winnipeg. Manitoba Council for Exceptional Children “Yes I Can!” awards are given to children and young adults with disabilities to acknowledge their achievements and encourage them to seek their highest potential.
The Atom Jet Group Innovator of the Month award meanwhile is presented to those who have demonstrated significant achievements, performances and contributions to teams, events and schools.
On the ice, the Wheat Kings will be hoping to salvage the second game of the weekend series after dropping a 3-2 Overtime Shootout decision to Kootenay on Friday. Saturday is also “Pink the Rink Night”, in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.
Tickets to the game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com
