Jerret Smith Off-Season Q&A
Jerret Smith is entering his second season with the T-Birds. The defenseman posted one goal and 19 assists for 20 points in 71 games during his rookie season. Smith took the time to answer some questions about last season and to look ahead to the 2013-14 season.
Seattle Thunderbirds: It was a dramatic end to last season, going to overtime in Game 7 against Kelowna. How exciting was it to play in the first round series, with five of the games being decided in overtime?
Jerret Smith: It was very exciting and a great experience to be in such a close series.
ST: What did you think of your first season overall in the WHL?
JS: It was very surreal; I learned a lot and gained a lot of experience that will help me going into next season.
ST: You got an assist in your 1stgame as a T-Bird. Did that give you confidence starting off your career like that?
JS: I was excited about getting my first point, but was more excited about the win.
ST: You were ranked in the NHL Central Scouting Final Rankings for draft eligible players. Is that something that you think about? Is it a distraction? What does it mean to you?
JS: It is an honor to be recognized, but I have been trying to stay focused on training for next year and not let it be a distraction.
ST: Is being drafted something you think about?
JS: Of course it is. It has always been my dream and is a huge stepping stone to get to the next level.
ST: Would you say that you’ve changed up your training regimen this summer after playing a year in the WHL, or is it similar to what you did in prior years?
JS: I definitely have changed it. Seeing the talent and strength in the WHL made me realize that I have to train harder in order to get ahead.
ST: What would you say is the best part of your on-ice game?
JS: My ability to see the ice and read plays.
ST: What would you say is one part of your game that you need to improve coming into this season?
JS: My skating and agility on the ice.
ST: What do you think are going to be the strengths of the T-Birds heading into the 2013-14 season?
JS: With having such a young team last year and going through a great playoff series, the team will have a good understanding of what it takes to win and compete.
ST: Do you set and statistical or team goals for yourself heading into a season? If so, what are they for this season?
JS: My goals for next year are for the T-Birds to go far in playoffs and to contribute 30 points to the team.
ST: Is there a player in the NHL that you would say you try to model your game after?
JS: I try to model my game after Rob Scuderi, but still be able to provide some offense.
