Strand scores in 3-1 loss to Everett

EVERETT, January 26, 2018 — The Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-1 Friday night at the Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett in the first game of a home-and-home series between the two teams.

The loss snaps the T-Birds five-game winning streak. The T-Birds are in third place in the US Division eight points behind the first place Silvertips with a game in hand and four points behind the second place Portland Winterhawks.

The T-Birds and Silvertips meet in the second game of the home-and-home series on Saturday at 7:05pm at accesso ShoWare Center.

Everett (31-16-1-1) opened the scoring at 9:25 of the first period on a goal from Bryce Kindopp. Matt Fonteyne and Patrick Bajkov had the assists.

Seattle (25-17-4-2) tied the game 1-1 at 11:50 of the first period on a power-play goal from Austin Strand. Samuel Huo kept an Everett clearing attempt in at the left point. Huo crossed the puck to Strand who skated into the right circle. Strand took a wrist shot that beat Everett goalie Carter Hart over the glove. The goal was Strand’s 16^th of the season and he leads WHL defenseman with 11 goals on the power play.

The T-Birds outshot the Silvertips 9-8 in the first period.

The Silvertips took a 2-1 lead 34 seconds into the second period on a power-play goal from Matt Fonteyne. Kevin Davis and Garret Pilon had the assists.

Everett had a 23-15 advantage in shots after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 15-6 in the third period.

Connor Dewar scored an unassisted goal at 9:40 of the third period to get the Silvertips third goal.

Everett finished with a 33-21 advantage in shots.

Seattle goalie Liam Hughes had 30 saves and his record is now 8-6-1-1.

Hart had 20 saves and his record is 18-3-0-1.
