Silvertips Comeback Falls Short Against T-Birds
KENT – Despite outshooting their opponent 30-25, the Everett Silvertips suffered a 4-2 loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds in a Tuesday night matchup at the ShoWare Center. The ‘Tips are 3-2 when facing the T-Birds this season with a 21-11-3-1 record overall as they reach the exact halfway point of the season in their final game of 2014. Everett begins a two-week road trip to the East Division with their first game Friday in Prince Albert, SK.
Dawson Leedahl and Nikita Scherbak scored goals for the Silvertips, while Kohl Bauml and Ben Betker picked up the assists. The ‘Tips have outshot their opponent in five of their last six games, but start their road trip have suffered two straight defeats.
The Thunderbirds opened scoring late in the first period to take the first lead. Lane Pederson received a pass in front of the net and fired a shot over the glove of goaltender Austin Lotz. Everett tied the game less than a minute later after Dawson Leedahl drove to the net and lifted the puck on his backhand to the top corner of the net.
Everett got an early powerplay in the second, but weren’t able to score with the man-advantage. Later in the frame Keegan Kolesar knocked in a powerplay goal to give the Thunderbirds a 2-1 lead. The Silvertips got another powerplay to end the second, but the score remained 2-1 despite the ‘Tips holding a 21-17 advantage on the shot clock.
Kolesar scored his second of the game early in the third to extend Seattle’s lead to two. Everett broke through on their fifth powerplay of the game after Nikita Scherbak fired a rocket from the top of the circle to bring the ‘Tips within one goal of the lead. Back-to-back penalties against the Silvertips gave the Thunderbirds a 5-on-3 powerplay, where Ethan Bear scored to restore their two-goal lead. Time expired with the ‘Tips up 30-25 in shots, but taking a 4-2 loss.
Austin Lotz (16-8-1-1) stopped 21 of 25 shots for Everett. Seattle goaltender Danny Mumaugh (2-4-0-0) turned away 28 shots. The Silvertips went 1 for 5 on the powerplay, while the Thunderbirds scored on 2 of 4.

The Silvertips will now board the bus and head northeast for six games over an 11-day journey through the WHL’s East Division. The trip starts Friday with the ‘Tips facing the Prince Albert Raiders at 5:00 pm Pacific time, with pregame radio coverage starting at 4:30 on Fox Sports 1380.
