Everett wins third straight preseason game
EVERETT – Building a 3-0 lead through the late stages of the second period and adding another goal in the third, the Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 Friday night at XFINITY Arena. Winning their final preseason game at their newly-renamed home arena, the ‘Tips improved to 4-2 in exhibition play heading into Saturday’s preseason finale against the Thunderbirds in Kent.
With a goal and assist on the night, Brayden Low took over the team lead in preseason points with six (2g/4a). Veteran forwards Carson Stadnyk, Kohl Bauml and Zane Jones each found the back of the net for Everett as well, while Tyler Sandhu pitched in with two helpers. Goaltender Carter Hart went the distance in net for the Silvertips in his first preseason appearance, turning away 29 of 30 shots.
The Silvertips struck first as an initial backhand shot from Tyler Sandhu allowed Brayden Low to pick up the rebound and tuck it between the legs of goaltender Taran Kozun. Everett followed up with a powerplay, but wasn’t able to convert and double the lead. After the ‘Tips killed off two penalties of their own, they maintained a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes with Seattle holding an 11-7 advantage on the shot clock.
Everett made it a 2-0 game after a great passing sequence from Brayden Low to Tyler Sandhu, who found Kohl Bauml racing to the net where he redirected the puck in. With seconds left in another ‘Tips powerplay Carson Stadnyk looked for a pass, but opted to take a sharp-angle shot and snuck the puck over the shoulder of Kozun to give Everett a three goal lead. Danny Mumaugh replaced Taran Kozun in the Seattle net following the goal. Seattle’s first goal of the game came on a powerplay late in the second when Mathew Barzal centered a pass to Ryan Gropp, who slid the puck underneath goaltender Carter Hart. The T-Birds continued to hold a 20-13 lead in shots heading into the final frame.
The Silvertips regained their three-goal lead with a quick shot from Zane Jones, who received a pass behind the defense from Remi Laurencelle early in the third. With emotions running high towards the end of the game, Jones and Jared Hauf dropped the gloves in a spirited bout between the two heavyweights. The Thunderbirds pulled their goaltender as time ran down on the clock, but Hart and Everett shut the door to finish the 4-1 win.
Final shots were 30-20 in favor of Seattle. Goaltender Taran Kozun turned away 9 of 12 shots in 35 minutes of play, while Danny Mumaugh stopped 7 of 8 in 24 minutes of work.
