Dustin Wolf earns 24th career shutout, Tips use early tone-setting goals in 5-0 win
EVERETT, Wash. – Dustin Wolf made 32 saves for his 24th career shutout and Hunter Campbell scored twice to help the Everett Silvertips cruise to a 5-0 victory over the Spokane Chiefs on Thursday night, in WHL action at Spokane Arena.
The Silvertips boosted their lead to nine points for first place in the U.S. Division at 12-3 (24 points) with 9 games remaining, scoring three times in the second period. The Tips improved to 2-1 over Spokane, visiting Spokane Arena for the first time in 14 months. Wolf’s fourth shutout of the season was his first in 10 games and included 13 saves in the final period.
UP NEXT: The Silvertips finish their trip tomorrow, 6:10 p.m. (KRKO/WHL Live) at Spokane Arena in a rematch against the Chiefs. Viewing packages remain on sale at watch.chl.ca. Play-by-play “Voice of the Tips” Mike Benton will have pre-game coverage beginning 30 minutes before puck drop.
The Tips used a formula of goal-scoring early in each period for success on Thursday and got going on Campbell’s first of two goals, a deflection at the net from a Gage Goncalves at 2:27 for a 1-0 lead. Ryan Hofer then stashed a feed from Ben Hemmerling at the net at the 2:01 mark to give the Tips a 2-0 edge.
Wolf got into a rhythm by that time, making several saves look routine while he darted in front of an errant pass off the boards and denied Cordel Larson’s open net bid. The Tips continued to build on Campbell’s second goal of the game, a rebound at the right post on the power play at 14:11 for a 3-0 lead and followed up on Jacob Wright’s snipe from the right wing on a two-on-one with 35 seconds left in the second period.
If the lead wasn’t insurmountable yet, Ethan Regnier helped remove any lingering doubt by going bar down on Campbell Arnold just 53 seconds into the third period for a 5-0 lead. The Tips were penalized to be assigned four penalty kill opportunities but successfully killed every attempt.
Arnold took the loss in net with 27 stops.
