RECAP // Nine Lives
EVERETT, Wash. – Blake Lyda made 40 saves in 65 minutes of action and Bryce Kindopp scored twice, but Payton Mount’s goal in the ninth round helped the Seattle Thunderbirds sneak past the Everett Silvertips, 4-3 in a shootout at accesso ShoWare Center in preseason action on Tuesday.
The Silvertips moved their preseason record to 2-1-1-2, missing a quartet of returning players with NHL training camp commitments, Connor Dewar, Riley Sutter, Jake Christiansen, and Wyatte Wylie. The Silvertips rallied from a two goal deficit in the second period and a one goal deficit in the third period.
UP NEXT: The Silvertips complete the preseason “home and home” series with the Thunderbirds and in the preseason finale on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at www.everettsilvertips.com/preseason.
Nolan Volcan buried a rebound at 3:16 and Graeme Bryks scored similarly at 12:51, both on power play goals to put Seattle up 2-0. The Tips immediately got to work erasing the deficit when Sean Richards cashed Luke Ormsby’s feed to the net off a turnover at 13:41 to slice the deficit to a goal, and Bryce Kindopp’s two-man advantage one timer at the left circle drew the Tips even at 15:15.
Samuel Huo converted Dillon Hamaliuk’s post-to-post feed at 7:33 of the second period for a 3-2 Thunderbirds edge, but the Tips tied the score with 8:14 left in regulation on Kindopp’s second goal of the game. Kindopp emerged out of a battle with the puck, walked out from the left circle and fired a snap shot past Eric Ward.
Following a scoreless overtime, Kindopp converted in the first round and Sean Richards was stopped in the second round in an attempt to put the game away. Zack Andrusiak converted a blocker side wrister in the third round to keep the game alive, and after a Matthew Wedman goal in the sixth round, Ormsby kept the Silvertips alive on his five hole bid. Mount snuck a backhanded deke for the Thunderbirds ninth round goal, and a shootout tying attempt by Martin Fasko-Rudas fell awry on a puck that slipped off his tape on a forehand bid.
Ward made 27 saves for the Thunderbirds to collect the win.
