GAME RECAP: Silvertips advance with 5-0 win over Vancouver in Game Five
EVERETT, Wash. — The Everett Silvertips punched their ticket to the Western Conference Semi-Final with a 5-0 win over the Vancouver Giants Sunday afternoon at Angel of the Winds Arena.
Early penalty troubles from a desperate Vancouver Giants team caused problems in the first period, as Vancouver took four minor penalties in the opening frame. Parker Berge capitalized on the powerplay at 15:34, burying a wrist shot from the blue line for his third goal of the series.
Everett began the second period on the powerplay with Ben Hemmerling striking 1:10 into the period for his third goal of the playoffs and Everett’s second of the night. Cade Zaplitny deflected a Niko Tsakumis shot past Giants goaltender Brett Mirwald 16:24 into the second period for a 3-0 Everett lead after two.
An unassisted quick release from Dominik Rymon 39 seconds into the third period put Everett up by four. Julius Miettinen tossed a backhand to the net to score his second goal of the playoffs and the fifth unanswered goal against Vancouver.
Tyler Palmer turned aside all 25 shots for the win, his second career WHL Playoff shutout. Brett Mirwald stopped 43 of 48 for Vancouver.
The Everett Silvertips will play the Portland Winterhawks in the Western Conference Semi-Final, with Game One scheduled for Friday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Everett playoff tickets will be on sale Monday.
