Silvertips Live Draft Day Blog & Analysis
3:00 PM: The ‘Tips have passed in Round 13, and their draft has concluded. Of Everett’s 10 players selected, six are forwards, three are defensemen, and one is a goaltender. We’ll have more to update in a little bit; it’s time to get some releases out. Keep checking EverettSilvertips.com – there’s more material to come.
2:55 PM: With their 12th round selection (225th overall), the Silvertips selected defenseman Darien Head of Salmon Arm, BC. This is the latest round in which the ‘Tips have made a draft pick since taking Austin Wuthrich in the 12th round in 2008. The ‘Tips have never made a 13th round draft pick, but those do happen from time to time. Head’s numbers:
#225 Everett: Darien Head – D, 5’10”, 145 lb

2:25 PM: There was an error on the WHL’s draft site, and the 6th pick of the 10th round, forward Sebastienne Barrette, does not belong to Everett. With their 10th round selection, the ‘Tips selected another Langley product, forward Ryan Rensby. Rensby is another player who suited up in the B.C. Cup. His numbers:

2:05 PM: So the Silvertips selected Ty Mappin seventh overall in today’s draft. Which other players have been taken seventh overall? 2010 – Keegan Kanzig, Chilliwack; 2009 – Connor Rankin, Tri-City; 2008 – Colin Smith, Kamloops; 2007 – Kevin Sundher, Chilliwack; 2006 – Carter Ashton, Lethbrudge; 2005 – Eric Mestery, Tri-City; 2004 – John Negrin, Kootenay; 2003 – Jason Reese, Vancouver; 2002 – Carey Price, Tri-City; 2001 – Cole Simpson, Seattle; 1997 – Scott Hartnell, Prince Albert. There are some interesting names in the mix…
1:50 PM: With their 9th round selection, 183rd overall, the Silvertips selected Weyburn, SK-based forward Nicholas Pouliot. This is a very interesting pick, as Pouliot’s brother, Derrick Pouliot, is a defenseman who was selected first overall in the WHL Draft two years ago and will enter his NHL Draft year in 2011-12 as an intriguing prospect. Nicholas played Bantam AA in Weyburn, SK last year. His numbers:

1:35 PM: The WHL site lists Kyle MacDonald as 5’11 / 163, while Alan Caldwell at Small Thoughts at Large lists MacDonald as 5’9 / 130. Hmmmmm….
1:30 PM: I just got word that Everett’s eighth round selection, Kyle MacDonald, is mistakenly listed as a right wing on the internet. He is a defenseman. Carry on.
1:20 PM: With their eighth round selection (161st overall), the Silvertips have selected Nanaimo, BC product Kyle MacDonald, who was born on 2/28/96, one day before their seventh round pick, Kyle Raymond. Though we don’t have his ’10-’11 bantam stats available yet, MacDonald recently appeared in the B.C. Cup, where he tallied two assists:

12:00 PM: I just got word that defenseman Brandon Hickey of Leduc, AB, selected in the fourth round by Tri-City, is not related to former Seattle Thunderbirds captain Thomas Hickey. The 6th round is underway now, and the ‘Tips should have a pick coming up…
11:55 AM: A big thank you to Gary for suggesting “Secrets” as the nickname for the Victoria team, and alluding to what could be a very interesting mascot. Hmmm…. maybe if this was the ECHL. Does anyone remember the Georgia-based Macon Whoopee? OK, let’s move on here. Thanks for the email, Gary! If you have any questions, send ’em this way – [email protected].
11:30 AM: It’s lunch time in Calgary. The Silvertips will be selecting shortly after we return. Everett still has the 117th, 136th, 161st, 183rd and 205th picks remaining.
10:45 AM: The Silvertips scouting department, on 4th round draft pick Michael Zipp: “Michael has good size and good movement, is solid in his own end and doesn’t often get beat one-on-one.”
10:35 AM: How about this: the Tri-City Americans have selected a player by the name of Brian Williams for the second year in a row. What’s bizarre is that both players hailed from the L.A. Selects program. Should both players make the team eventually, lots of broadcasters will be shaking their fists in the direction of the Toyota Center. In all seriousness, I’m not familiar with the ’96-born Brian Williams, though the ’95-born Brian Williams has been described as an elite talent who was considering the NCAA route; Tri-City selected him with their 8th round pick in 2010 and signed him to a WHL contract.
10:30 AM: With their fourth round selection (73rd overall), the Silvertips selected 5’11 Edmonton-based defenseman Michael Zipp. Zipp is a late birthday, having been born on September 20th, 1996, and would not be eligible for the NHL Draft until 2015. We’ll get a quote from the Silvertips scouting department shortly; below are Zipp’s numbers:
#73 Everett: Michael Zipp – D, 5’11”, 157 lb

10:00 AM: I just chatted with Garry Ryhorchuk, one of Everett’s Saskatchewan-based scouts, and this is what he had to say about Everett’s second round draft pick, forward Dawson Leedahl: “Dawson is a strong, two-way player with skill who can score. He has good leadership qualities on and off the ice and competes hard. We’re really glad to select Dawson with the 40th pick, as we had him rated much higher.” Dawson played in six games with the Midget AAA Saskatoon contacts this past season; , the team that ’94-born Silvertips prospect Kohl Bauml tallied 66 points for (27-39-66) in 44 games last season.
9:50 AM: With their second round selection (40th overall), the Silvertips have selected Saskatoon-based forward Dawson Leedahl. Leedahl played for the Bantam AA Saskatoon Maniacs, where he posted 127 points (56-71-127) and 196 penalty minutes in 54 games played, and also got into two games as an under-ager at with the Saskatoon Contacts at the Macs Midget Tournament. His stats, with thanks once again going out to Alan Caldwell, are listed below:

9:10 AM: How about a round of applause for the WHL’s excellent coverage of the WHL Bantam Draft? Joey Kenward, who led the coverage as the moderator, is a Vancouver Canucks broadcaster. Many Silvertips fans are already well accustomed to hearing him as an analyst for Fox Sports Northwest and Shaw broadcasts, and as the former voice of the Vancouver Giants, with whom he annouced a Memorial Cup Championship and WHL Championship. Kenward was well-prepared and executed the first round’s coverage well. Also, big kudos to the WHL for a very professional video, including various camera angles, reaction shots, and immediate interviews of Team Personnel. I came away extremely impressed with today’s coverage.
9:05 AM: Here’s what Director of Player Development Scott Scoville had to say about first round draft pick Ty Mappin: “Ty is a highly dynamic forward who should be one of the more skilled guys to come though our system in quite a while. He’s naturally skilled, and we hope he’ll provide an offensive jolt to the group he’s going to play with. The puck always seems to find him.” The first round is complete. Everett picks 18th in the second round (40th overall).
8:35: We’ve seen our first trade here in the first round, as archrivals Regina and Moose Jaw have swapped picks. Regina sent t
he 16th overall pick and the 80th overall pick to Moose Jaw for the 36th, 44th and 106th overall picks.
8:25: Courtesy of Dean and Guy at The Pipeline Show, based out of Edmonton, here’s a photo of Silvertips draft pick Ty Mappin.
8:11 AM: With the 12th overall pick, Victoria selects Kamloops-based forward Joe Hickotts. This is Victoria’s first WHL Bantam pick since 1993, back when they were known as the Victoria Cougars. Earlier this off-season, it was announced that the Chilliwack Bruins have relocated to the BC capital in Victoria. The team is still without a nickname. Any suggestions? Victoria Capitals? Victoria Ports? Email me your suggestions: [email protected].
8:05 AM: Courtesy of Alan Caldwell at Small Thoughts at Large, here are some of Mappin’s recent statistics and some analysis by The Pipeline Show:

Younger brother of former WHLer Cassidy Mappin
Comments from The Pipeline Show draft preview: “Ty capped off a sensational bantam campaign with an outstanding performance at the Alberta Cup. “…this guys is the best forward in the entire province of Alberta no question. Ty’s versatile play also allows him to play defence when called upon, thus making him one of the top defenceman in this year’s draft as well!”
8:00 AM: It’s official! Let’s welcome forward Ty Mappin to the Everett Silvertips family. Mappin is a 5’11 forward out of Red Deer, Alberta, who has some scoring credentials from bantam. More news and press releases to come! The Silvertips’ next pick will be the 18th pick of the 2nd round (40th overall), the pick received in the trade with Medicine Hat back in January.
7:50: There are still several excellent forwards available early in this draft. With the #2, #3, and #4 selections, Swift Current, Lethbridge and Kamloops have all selected defensemen. For more draft day coverage, click here for Alan Caldwell’s Small Thoughts at Large blog.
7:40 AM: With the first pick in the WHL Draft, the Calgary Hitmen selected a somewhat local product: dynamic forward Jake Virtanen, a 5’11, 164 pound forward from Abbotsford, BC. The first pick in the 2008 WHL Draft – the draft in which the Silvertips selected Ryan Murray – went to the Red Deer Rebels, who chose Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Could Nugent-Hopkins go first overall in this year’s NHL Draft to the Edmonton Oilers?
7:30 AM: Welcome to the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft! Today we’re going to see the Silvertips add a handful of new players to their protected list on what is always an interesting day around the Western Hockey League. The Silvertips today occupy the 7th, 40th, 73rd, 117th, 136th, 161st, 183rd and 205th picks in the draft, though there is some occasional player movement from year to year. At last year’s draft, the ‘Tips added an extra pick by trading down in an draft pick swap with Edmonton, and were still able to select the player they had targeted, forward Ryan Chynoweth, who would go on to make his WHL debut as a 15-year old, playing one game for Everett in 2010-11. Who will the ‘Tips pick today? Let’s find out. Well, the draft is dow underway, and you can access a live webcast of the first round by clicking here. Let’s have fun… and go ‘Tips! If you ever have questions about the day’s events, please email me at [email protected].
