GAME RECAP: Silvertips tie franchise record with five PPGs in 8-7 win over Vancouver
LANGLEY, B.C. — The Everett Silvertips pulled out a wild one, topping the Vancouver Giants 8-7 at the Langley Events Centre Saturday night.
Jaden Lipinski scored the teddy bear toss goal for Vancouver with a shorthanded breakaway at 6:00, his ninth of the year. The Silvertips answered on the same powerplay moments after cleanup was completed, as Tarin Smith breezed a shot from the blueline by Brett Mirwald for his fifth of the campaign. Kaden Hammell potted a powerplay goal of his own at 15:08, his second of the year, followed by a Dominik Rymon snipe from the slot just 11 seconds after.
Samuel Honzek notched a powerplay goal for the Giants at 17:10 to cut the lead to 3-2 heading into the first intermission.
Lipinski netted his second of the game on the man advantage just 31 seconds into the second period to even up the score, followed by yet another powerplay goal for Ty Halaburda at 7:37 for a 4-3 Giants lead.
Wyatt Wilson was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a hit to the head on Silvertips captain Austin Roest at 17:37- the second consecutive night the Giants incurred a game misconduct. Rymon scored on the major before period’s end to once more knot the score at 4-4 at the end of two.
With the major carrying over into the third, Ben Hemmerling tallied his first of two on the night at 2:08. Julius Miettinen struck just 10 seconds after for the third goal of the major powerplay and a 6-4 Everett lead. A tripping penalty led to a Tyler Thorpe powerplay goal at 9:12, but Beau Courtney answered under a minute later with a goal at even-strength- his seventh of the year.
Thorpe netted another powerplay goal after a delay of game penalty at 15:33, and at 16:12 Cameron Schmidt brought the Giants back even at 7-7 with his eighth of the season.
Hemmerling snuck a low shot through the five-hole of Mirwald with 1:26 left on the clock to steal the 8-7 win for Everett.
Tyler Palmer stopped 14 of 18 in relief to earn the win. Mirwald turned aside 35 of 43. Everett’s five powerplay goals tie a franchise-record, achieved eight prior times and on four previous occasions in the Dennis Williams era (since 2017-18). It is the first time in Silvertips history that they have ever allowed five powerplay goals and won the game.
