2011 WHL Bantam Draft Preview
2011 WHL BANTAM DRAFT
The Western Hockey League will conduct its annual Bantam Draft on Thursday, May 5th, in the Palomino Room at the BMO Centre in Calgary, AB, where the Silvertips occupy the seventh overall pick in the first round. The #7 slot is the earliest the Silvertips have drafted since selecting Zach Hamill third overall in the 2003 WHL Bantam Draft. The Calgary Hitmen will make the draft’s first selection at 7:30 AM Pacific Time.
For the first time ever, the WHL Bantam Draft will be aired live, free of charge, via LIVE webcast available at http://www.whl.ca/ . You’ll also be able to follow the day’s events on EverettSilvertips.com, where broadcaster Jon Rosen will host a live draft blog beginning at 7:15 AM Pacific Time. There will be additional WHL Bantam Draft coverage on Fox Sports 1380 featuring interviews with Silvertips VP / GM Doug Soetaert and Director of Player Development Scott Scoville from 3:30 – 4:00 pm on Friday, May 6th.
Of Everett’s eight previous first round selections, two were selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft (Zach Hamill / 8th overall / Boston Bruins; Kyle Beach / 11th overall / Chicago Blackhawks), one was selected in the second round (Kent Simpson / 58th overall / Chicago Blackhawks), and one was signed to an NHL contract as a free agent (Kellan Tochkin / Vancouver Canucks), while Ryan Murray, Everett’s team captain, is a projected top-10 pick in 2012.
The WHL Bantam Draft is the first opportunity for WHL Clubs to replenish their systems with graduating Bantam-aged players. The order of selection for the first round of the draft is determined through a weighted lottery consisting of the six non-playoff teams. The draft order is based on the inverse overall standings from the regular season.
Players eligible for the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft will be 1996-born players who reside in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
