Kennewick, WA – In a Friday night match-up at the Toyota Center, the Victoria Royals went up against the Tri-City Americans. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in net, while the Americans countered with Eric Comrie.
Victoria opened the scoring midway through the first period when Brandon Fushimi found Ben Walker on the powerplay. The Royals’ forward tallied his eighth goal of the season when he received the puck at the right face-off dot and wired it past Comrie’s left shoulder at the 10:06 mark. The Americans tried to take advantage of a late Victoria penalty, but Polivka stood tall and Victoria finished the frame with a 1-0 lead.
Austin Carroll increased the Royals’ lead on a man advantage at the 11:28 mark of the second period. Tyler Soy snapped a shot that was stopped by Comrie before Carroll found the rebound and shoveled the puck into the open net. Polivka continued his strong play as he stopped all 22 shots through two periods to keep Victoria up 2-0 after 40 minutes of play.
The Royals added to their lead with another powerplay marker from Logan Nelson that was later credited to Axel Blomqvist at the 4:26 mark of the third. The Rogers, MN native received a pass from Steven Hodges in the high slot where he fired a slap shot past Comrie to make it a 3-0 game. Video review later showed that Blomqvist deflected Nelson’s shot for his first goal as a Royal. The Americans pulled Comrie for an extra attacker late and would get on the board at the 18:57 mark with a powerplay goal from Connor Rankin. The Royals tightened up defensively in the dying moments and preserved the road win. Victoria 3 Tri-City 1.
Victoria went 3/4= 75.0% on the powerplay, while Tri-City went 1/4= 25.0%. The Americans outshot the Royals 34-29.
Victoria will now travel to Seattle to face the Thunderbirds tomorrow night. The Royals will then return to Vancouver Island to face projected first overall 2014 NHL Draft pick Sam Reinhart and the Kootenay Ice on Tuesday. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Tuesday night.
