Royals Forward Brayden Schuurman Continues to Impress Ahead of Midterm Rankings
It’s been quite the year for Royals forward Brayden Schuurman. The 5’9”, one-hundred- and ninety-two-pound forward is a 2022 NHL Draft eligible prospect, who has caught everyone’s attention in his second season with the Royals.
Schuurman was born in Abbotsford, BC, just a short ferry ride away from where he now suits up for the Victoria Royals. The 17-year-old, who models his game after Bo Horvat and Patrice Bergeron, was selected by the Royals in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft, where he was chosen 69th overall in the fourth round.
This season, the two-way centre started off with a bang, when he was named the WHL player of the week for October 3rd – 10th. During that span, he scored five goals and added an assist for a total six points in two games. Through 34 games this season, Schuurman has 21 goals and 11 assists for 32 points.
As an eligible 2022 NHL draft prospect, Schuurman has climbed the draft rankings with his incredible season so far. At the start of the year, he was ranked as a “C” prospect by the NHL Central Scouting Rankings, which ranks players based on a projected pick in the upcoming NHL draft. In the most recent NHL CSR rankings two weeks ago, Schuurman had moved to 58th for North American Skaters. This ranking puts him 12th for WHL players, and eighth on the forward list.
Schuurman is happy with his season so far but knows there’s still some work to be done both individually and as part of the Royals before he focuses on the NHL draft.
“I would like to take my game to another level, help this team make the playoffs and continue to push for team success,” he told Royals media.
The 2022 NHL Draft will take place on July 7th, and 8th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, QC where Schuurman hopes to continue climb up the draft rankings.
Schuurman and the Royals are back on home ice tomorrow as they welcome the Vancouver Giants for Bell Let’s Talk Night, a game that supports the annual “Bell Let’s Talk’ campaign designed to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and to support mental health across Canada. Then on Saturday the 22nd, the Everett Silvertips are in Victoria for the Royals Halfway to Summer Jam game sponsored by Molson Canadian.
