The Victoria Royals fought to come back from a 4-1 deficit against the Saskatoon Blades to earn a 5-4 shootout win this afternoon in the team’s second Eastern Conference match of the weekend and fourth shootout game of the season.
Saskatoon opened the scoring early in the first period with a power play goal at 4:40 from Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Brandon Lisowski. The Blades extended their lead with a goal from Tyler Parr at 16:17 to leave the Royals trailing 2-0 heading into the second period.
Just before the midway mark of the second period, Markus Loponen put the Royals on the board with a goal assisted by Reggie Newman and Brayden Boehm. Saskatoon quickly reinstated their two-goal lead with a goal from Ben Saunderson 31 seconds later, bringing the score to 3-1 going into the third period.
The Blades would get another goal from Cooper Williams at 2:03 in the third period, extending their lead to 4-1. Cole Reschny, with assists from Nate Misskey and Justin Kipkie, would put one in about halfway through the period to cut Saskatoon’s lead to two. Markus Loponen would get his second goal of the game at 16:57, assisted by Brayden Boehm and Reggie Newman to make the score 4-3. Cole Reschny rallied to score his second of the game, assisted by Justin Kipkie and Nate Misskey, knotting the game at four and forcing the game into overtime.
Neither team would find the back of the net in the overtime frame, so the match was left to a shootout.
