Rocket Rookie Camp Over; Main Camp Begins Monday
The Kelowna Rockets have closed the books on its 2011 Rookie Camp, saying goodbye to most of the 160 young players who were skating for the past three and a half days at Prospera Place.
Prospects had one final game Sunday morning before each met with members of the Rockets scouting staff before leaving Prospera Place.
Around 10 of the prospects will be asked to stay for a few days at the Rockets main training camp which will begin with fitness testing of veterans on Monday morning, registration Monday night and the first games of the camp on Tuesday.
Rockets assistant general manager and head scout Lorne Frey said he was pleased with the team’s rookie camp.
“We had a good camp,” said Frey between exit meetings with the players. “There was pretty good parity. We had a lot of good young hockey players. We got to see some things from individuals that we are pleased with and overall we just hope the kids had a good time and really enjoyed themselves.”
Rockets general manager Bruce Hamilton agreed that it was a good camp.
“It was an excellent camp,” said Hamilton. “There were lots of good players.”
The Rockets now turn the page to its main training camp in advance of the start of the Western Hockey League exhibition schedule.
Three teams will participate in the main camp which begins with ice sessions on Tuesday morning and continues until Thursday before the Rockets practice on Friday morning and host the Vancouver Giants on Friday night at Prospera Place.
There are two exhibition games this weekend as the Rockets host Vancouver Friday and Victoria on Sunday.
The Rockets open the regular season Sept. 24 in Everett and hold its home opener Oct. 1 against the Giants.
