Sweep Victory
The Red Deer Rebels defeated the Swift Current Broncos 5-1 Sunday night at the Credit Union i-Plex. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would start the scoring off giving the Rebels the lead fifteen minutes into play, tucking a Colten Mayor feed high over goalie Mark Friesen. The contest would remain 1-0 until early into the second period when Byron Froese would find a way past Broncos netminder Mark Friesen and put the Rebels up by two. After forty minutes of play, the Broncos would trail 3-0 as the Rebels’ Brett Ferguson would add a single late in the second, wristing a shot from the slot to the high corner. In the third period, Turner Elson and John Persson would make it 5-0, scoring within five minutes of each other. Broncos Captain Justin Dowling would break the potential shut out in the dying minutes of the contest notching his 13th of the season, making it a 5-1 final. Neither team could capitalize on the man advantage as the Broncos were 0 for 4 and the Rebels were 0 for 3. Shots were 28-24 favoring Red Deer. Dawson Guhle was solid in the Rebels’ net, losing his shutout bid in the dying minutes. The win is his first as a Rebels since joining the club earlier in the year.
The win means a sweep of the 4-game East Division road trip, running the Rebels win streak to 5 games, dating back to last weekends’ win in Cranbrook. In those 5 games, the Rebels have beaten their opponents by scores of 6-1, 4-0, 2-1, 6-0, and 5-1 respectively.
Next action is a date with the Tigers in the Hat Friday night. A home battle versus the Warriors takes place on Saturday night (7:30, Enmax Centrium).
