Solid Effort, Wrong Result
Kootenay opened the scoring while on the man advantage midway through the opening period. Max Reinhart, who has been great for the Ice since returning from camp with the Calgary Flames, scores with Jagger Dirk and Luke Paulsen earning assists. 1-0 Kootenay at 9:33 of the first period. That’s how the first period would end. Rebels outshoot Kootenay in the opening 20 minutes 10-9.
A quiet start to the second period until Jesse Ismond gets called for charging to give the Rebels a powerplay at 11:55. Cory Millette then makes a great play to set up Adam Kambeitz who puts home his fourth goal of the season. Daulton Siwak gets the second assist. Game tied 1-1 at 13:43.Just seconds later, Justin Weller dishes out a hard check on Max Reinhart but is called for checking to the head. On the ensuing powerplay, Kootenay restores their one goal lead thanks to Elgin Pearce. Brock Montgomery and Dirk get the assists on the goal at 15:48. Kootenay leads Red Deer 2-1 after 40 minutes despite being outshot 16-5 in the middle frame.
In the third period… Elgin Pearce gets called for tripping, giving the Rebels a powerplay with 4:53 remaining. John Persson had a good scoring chance from in deep but fired it wide. The Rebels come close but can’t convert on their man advantage opportunity.The Rebels got another powerplay with 1:18 left in the 3rd as Joey Leach went off for interference. Patrik Bartosak came to the bench giving the Rebels an extra attacker for a 6-on-4 powerplay. Once again, John Persson came close but missed the net. Kootenay hung on to kill the clock and earn a 2-1 victory. Final shots on goal were 34-25 for the Rebels.
