Bartosak lifts Rebels
Fans had to wait an extra half hour or so for the start of this game thanks to not one, but two, pieces of glass breaking during pre-game warmups. Once that was taken care of fans at the Enmax Centrium were treated to yet another exciting tilt. The Warriors came out flying in the first period but were unable to get one past Patrik Bartosak, the reigning CHL Goaltender of the Week. For that matter, the Rebels were also unable to get one past Moose Jaw netminder Luke Siemens. The highlight of the period came when Alex Petrovic laid a massive hit on the Warriors’ Andrew Johnson who had his head down inside the Rebels blueline. Petro then stood his ground in a spirited bout with Dylan McIlrath. No score after one period of play. Shots heavily in favour of the Warriors 16-3.
The Rebels opened the scoring at 7:43 of the second period. Colton Mayor gained control of the puck in the Moose Jaw slot then fed a slick pass over to Tyson Ness. He tucked home his fourth goal of the season to give Red Deer a 1-0 lead.Moose Jaw tied it 1-1 just under 11 minutes later. In a goal mouth scramble, Bartosak couldn’t corral the loose puck. McIlrath eventually did and jammed it home for his first goal of the season. Sam Fioretti and Torrin Smith earned assists on the goal at 18:41. 1-1 after two periods. Moose Jaw leading on the shot clock 25-9.
In the third period… despite still being outshot heavily, the Rebels found a way to take the lead. At the 11:42 mark, Siemens got a piece of Turner Elson’s shot but not enough to keep it out of the net. Elson scores his third goal of the season with Mayor earning another assist. 2-1 Rebels with less than nine minutes remaining. The Warriors pressed hard in the late stages of the period. But a pair of untimely penalties in the final three minutes gave the Rebels the powerplay. Daulton Siwak would take advantage to score his 2nd of the season from Mathew Dumba and Mayor (his 3rd assist tonight). 3-1 Rebels with 1:24 remaining. However, the Warriors made it interesting just 20 seconds later. Morgan Rielly fired a screen shot past Bartosak for his third of the season. Brett Lyon drew the lone assist on the goal. The Rebels were then able to kill the final 1:04 to hold on for a 3-2 victory. Final shots were 41-16 for Moose Jaw.
