Raiders Split Home-And-Home Series With Loss In Brandon
Brandon, MB – The Prince Albert Raiders (19-43-7-2) split their weekend home-and-home series with the Brandon Wheat King (30-28-7-3) following a 5-3 loss at Westman Place on Saturday night.
The night started out well for the Raiders. Parker Kelly scored his 19th goal of the year when he potted his own rebound 2:39 into the game. Midway through the frame, Cole Fonstad buried a rebound on a Raiders’ power play to put his team up 2-0.
Three minutes later, Stelio Mattheos scored a power-play goal of his own, bringing the Wheat Kings within one after the first period.
Brandon took control of the scoreboard in the second period. Reid Duke beat Ian Scott on a mid-period power play to tie the game up at 2-2. Thirty-four seconds later, Connor Gutenberg ot behind the Raiders’ defence to give the Wheat Kings a 3-2 lead. Later in the period, Nolan Patrick found the back of the net to put Brandon up 4-2.
Early in the third, James Shearer increased Brandon’s lead to 5-2 with a blast from the point. Kolten Olynek got the Raiders back within two with 5:59 to play, but it was as close as they got. Adam Kadlec and Parker Kelly had breakaway opportunities late in the game, but Logan Thompson turned both aside.
In the loss, Scott finished the game with 37 saves on 42 attempts. Thompson stopped 26 Raider shots to earn the win for Brandon.
The Raiders take the ice again on Tuesday night when they travel to Moose Jaw to tangle with the Warriors at Mosaic Place in the finale of the eight-game season series. The next Raiders’ home game is also the last game of the season. The Raiders host the Saskatoon Blades for the season finale on Saturday, March 18 at the Art Hauser Centre.
