RECAP: Hitmen Win Special Teams Battle in 3-1 Victory over Oil Kings
Calgary, AB – The Calgary Hitmen closed out the weekend with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday.
Andrei Molgachev opened the scoring for Calgary early in the first period. The Hitmen extended their lead in the second with back-to-back power-play goals from Julien Maze and Molgachev.
Edmonton got on the board in the third period when Miroslav Holinka scored on the power play to cut the deficit to two. Calgary’s penalty kill proved to be a major factor in the win, successfully killing off five of Edmonton’s six power-play opportunities.
Goaltender Eric Tu was stellar in net, making 29 saves and earning first star honours. Molgachev was named second star after his two goal performance. With the victory, the Hitmen extended their cushion over the Brandon Wheat Kings in the race for home-ice advantage in the playoffs. Calgary now sits five points ahead in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with three games left on the regular season schedule.
Calgary is in Edmonton to on Wednesday, Mar. 18 to conclude this home and home set with the Oil Kings before returning home for their final regular season home game and Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday, Mar. 21 against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at the ‘Dome.
