RECAP: Hitmen Defeat WHL Leading Silvertips 3-1
Calgary, AB – The Calgary Hitmen welcomed the Everett Silvertips to the Scotiabank Saddledome for their only meeting of the season, skating away with a 3-1 victory over the WHL leading Silvertips breaking their 13 game win streak.
Calgary’s power play proved to be the difference, accounting for all three goals on the night. The Hitmen opened the scoring just under five minutes into the first period when Harrison Lodewyk tipped home a shot from Blake Vanek. Kale Dach extended the lead later in the frame, wiring a sharp angle shot from the corner for his 30th goal of the season.
Everett responded midway through the second period, with Julius Miettinen cutting the deficit to one. However, Julien Maze restored Calgary’s two goal lead late in the period, finishing off a slick behind the back pass from Ethan Moore to make it 3-1 heading into the third. The final frame remained scoreless thanks in large part to Eric Tu, who was stellar in net turning aside 42 shots in an impressive performance.
Calgary sits fourth in the Eastern Conference, holding a four-point cushion and a game in hand over the Brandon Wheat Kings as they continue their push for home ice advantage in the postseason.
Calgary will enjoy a full four-day break before hosting Saskatoon on Saturday, Feb. 21 in a 6:00 p.m. start at the ‘Dome.
