The Kamloops Blazers finished their Eastern road trip with one final stop in Swift Current for a date against the Broncos.
Newly acquired Carson Olsen made his Blazers debut on the top pairing with captain Ryan Michael. Olsen, a 2006-born defenceman, was acquired from the Lethbridge Hurricanes for a draft pick earlier this week.
The first period got off to a quick start as Nathan Behm fired a shot that deflected into the net just 23 seconds into the game. About a minute later, Bronocs’ Noah Kosick tied the game at 1-1. The Blazers headed to a powerplay and a glorious opportunity came for JP Hurlbert when Tommy Lafreniere fed him a cross ice pass, but he was denied by Swift Current goaltender Joey Rocha.
Lafreniere would continue the offensive drive and he was able to snipe home his eighth goal of the season to give the Blazers a one goal lead. Kamloops kept the heavy pressure coming as Hurlbert had another big opportunity, but Rocha stood tall with a flurry of saves for the Broncos. 16-year-old Jacob Dumansky, who picked up his first WHL point earlier in the trip against Moose Jaw, was in the mix with Hurlbert and had a chance to extend the lead, but Rocha turned him aside as well.
Logan Edmonstone was tested on early in the second frame and was able to stand tall between the pipes with a pair of saves. Kamloops continued to push offensively, with Andrew Thomson getting a couple of strong looks but being turned away by Rocha. The Broncos found their legs midway through the period, generating pressure off the rush and forcing Edmonstone to make several sharp stops, including a glove save off Kosick.
The third period opened with end-to-end action as both teams traded high-quality chances in the first five minutes, but the goaltenders stood tall at each end. During a Broncos powerplay, Jace McFaul ripped home a one-timer to tie the game at two.
Not long after, Hurlbert nearly restored the Blazers’ lead when he found himself loose down low, but Rocha got just enough of his blocker on the shot to keep it out. Lafreniere nearly got his second goal of the game but his blistering shot rang off the post keeping the game tied. Edmonstone responded moments later with a flurry of key saves of his own, sending the game to overtime.
Three-on-three overtime opened with a quick chance for Hurlbert, who nearly slipped in alone but instead dished a slick pass to Behm, whose drive to the net was turned aside by Rocha. Moments later, Edmonstone would come up with the save of the game, diving across the crease to stop McFaul on the one timer.
Kamloops went to the powerplay and had big chances from Hurlbert and Moore but were denied. With neither side able to find the winner, the game moved to a shootout, where Kosick scored the deciding goal to secure a 3-2 victory for Swift Current.
The Blazers will return home to open a weekend set against the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday at the Sandman Centre.
