The Kamloops Blazers hit the road for Seattle on Friday, facing the Thunderbirds for a third straight game.
Seattle struck first when Matej Pekar beat Logan Edmonstone four minutes into the game. The Blazers generated chances of their own but Marek Sklenicka was able to stand tall between the pipes and helped keep the game at 1-0. Seattle doubled their lead when Brendan Rudolph fired the puck past Edmonstone to make it 2-0 late in the first period.
Down two heading into the second, Kamloops began to push back. Jordan Keller put home a powerplay goal to cut the deficit to one. Blazers’ Josh Evaschesen then delivered a hit to Thunderbirds Sawyer Mayes, which resulted in a scrum breaking out. Evaschesen was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct.
The Blazers still found life, it was JP Hurlbert following up his own rebound to notch his seventh goal of the season and tie the game at 2-2. But, the tie wouldn’t last long as on the ensuing five-minute major, Antonio Martorana would make it 3-2 Thunderbirds before Pekar struck again to make it 4-2.
Tempers flared and a scrap would break out between Blazers’ Madden Tymchak and Seattle’s Brayden Holberton. Tymchak was a nailgun in that fight as he tried to fire up the Blazers bench.
Cameron Kuzma got it rolling for the Thunderbirds in the third, kicking off the period with a goal. However, the Blazers answered back as Edmonton Oilers prospect Tommy Lafreniere set up Jordan Keller for his second of the night to keep Kamloops within striking distance.
Logan Edmonstone then came up with another big clutch save, denying a 3-on-1 rush. Keller then struck again on the powerplay, netting a hat trick and pulling the Blazers within one. But just as the Blazers gained momentum, a quick turnover led to Rudolph scoring his second of the game and restoring the Thunderbirds two-goal lead.
The Blazers continued to push until the final horn in another hard-fought effort. Kamloops will face the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday.
