As the puck drops on another WHL season, forward Max Sullivan is preparing for what he hopes will be a breakout year.
Coming into his 19-year-old season, Sullivan believes he has the tools and experience to elevate his game, and he knows exactly what it will take to do so. “Consistency. That was my focus last year, and now in my 19-year-old season, I have more experience,” Sullivan said. “I’ve learned from the top guys in this league, so it’s about building each year and staying consistent.”
Sullivan turned heads in training camp, being one of the top contributors throughout the scrimmages and even lighting the lamp in the first preseason game against the Vancouver Giants.
The Calgary native is a crafty forward who showed flashes of creativity throughout training camp. His favourite player? Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Kane. “Growing up, Patrick Kane was my favourite. He’s definitely the player I try to model myself after. I love watching him and seeing what he can do on the ice.”
While many players spend summers adding size or refining skills, Sullivan put much of his energy into sharpening a different part of his game.”The biggest thing I worked on is my mindset. That’s such a huge part of the game, but it’s often overlooked. I feel confident coming back and I’m ready to go.”
Sullivan is also stepping into a bigger role this season as a veteran player. “I’ve been in leadership roles before, and I try to embrace that. With my experience, I want to help the younger guys and take on a bigger role this year.”
With a big year ahead for Kamloops, Sullivan sees big things ahead for the club. “We’ve got a lot of great players and we want to win. It’s about taking things night by night, but we believe we have the team to do something special this year.”
