19-year-old Josh Evaschesen is ready to make his mark with the Kamloops Blazers after earning a WHL contract during training camp. “It’s amazing. I’ve worked for this my whole life, so to finally achieve that, it’s just an honour, and I’m super grateful for the opportunity,” Evaschesen said.
Evaschesen played for the Trail Smoke Eaters in the BCHL during the 2024-25 season and notched five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in 34 games. Coming from the BCHL, he’s noticed some differences in the pace of the game during preseason. “It’s definitely a bit quicker, a bit faster, but it’s not too big of a jump, which is nice.”
Growing up, the Medicine Hat native was a big fan of former Medicine Hat Tigers forward Curtis Valk. Evaschesen also points to “Nicklas Backstrom or Patrice Bergeron — just a two-way kind of forward who can put points up but also plays well in the D zone.”
As for what he brings to the Blazers? Evaschesen says it’s his two-way game. “I like to get in the D zone, get on the forecheck, retrieve pucks, but I’ve also got some skill. I can pass the puck and put it in the net.” he said.
Evaschesen has drawn some comparisons to former Blazer Daylan Kuefler. Blazers fans can expect a hard-working, versatile forward eager to contribute both offensively and defensively in his rookie campaign.
