Team OHL names Captains and Alternates
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League in association with the Canadian Hockey League today announced the players that will serve as Captains and Alternates for the 2013 SUBWAY® Super Series games to be played in Oshawa on Thursday November 21 and in Sudbury on Monday November 25.
Philadelphia Flyers prospect Scott Laughton of the host Oshawa Generals will captain Team OHL for both games against the Russian National Junior Team, with Vancouver Canucks prospect Brendan Gaunce of the Belleville Bulls, and New York Islanders prospect Adam Pelech of the Erie Otters serving as alternates.
Laughton, a 19-year-old from Oakville, ON, was selected 20th overall by the Flyers in the 2012 NHL Draft. A member of Team OHL for the second straight year, Laughton participated in Game 3 of the series held in Guelph last season won 2-1 by Team Russia and this past summer participated in Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Development Camp. In 20 games with the Generals this season, Laughton has scored 17 goals with 18 assists for 35 points.
Gaunce will be competing in his first SUBWAY® Super Series game after being replaced due to injury last season. Selected 26th overall by the Canucks in 2012, the Bulls’ captain also competed at Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Development Camp. The 19-year-old from Markham, ON, has 23 points in 20 games this season. Pelech, a 19-year-old Toronto, ON, native has 15 points in 23 games and is an alternate captain for the Otters who currently rank atop the OHL standings with 39 points. The 2012 third round pick of the Islanders was invited to attend Canada’s National Junior Summer Development Camp but was unable to participate due to injury. Last season he competed in Game 4 of the 2012 SUBWAY® Super Series played in Sarnia where Team OHL emerged with a 2-1 victory.
Laughton is one of four Generals’ competing on home ice Thursday night alongside forward Michael Dal Colle, defenceman Josh Brown, and goaltender Daniel Altshuller. Brown will join Laughton and also compete in Game 4 of the series in Sudbury. Pelech is one of three Otters on the team with forwards Connor Brown and Connor McDavid also competing in both games. Gaunce is the only member of the Bulls competing with Team OHL this season.
The SUBWAY® Super Series is an integral part of the evaluation process prior to Team Canada’s final selection camp in December. Team OHL enters the 11th anniversary of this event with a 19-1 record against Team Russia.
The 2013 SUBWAY® Super Series is supported by CHL associate sponsors, Bank of Montreal and Old Dutch. All six games will be broadcast on Sportsnet.
